WINTERIZING YOUR ROSES

With a few exceptions, all of the roses that we sell here at Adams Nurseries have passed the "winter" test here and are recommended by the Western New York Rose Society.  That being said, you still need to do a few things to ensure the best chance of survival come spring.

Don't protect too early.  Let the plants loose their leaves naturally.  Clean up all the debris in the bed.  Black spot and other diseases are on the leaves so they need to be removed.

Tie the canes together with natural twine to make this easier.  Cut the canes back where necessary.  Climbing roses only need to be tied and supported.  Mound loose garden soil over the base (crown) of the plant.  Avoid using wet soil if possible.  To keep the soil in place, use a rose collar or wire mesh around each mound. Once the ground is frozen, you can mound with evergreen boughs for more insulation.

When to uncover?  This can vary from mid-March to Mid-April, depending upon the weather.  The goal is to open the plants up to air as soon as possible, while still protecting them from extreme cold.
