Notes from the Cottage Archives

May 30, 2007

I had hoped by this time to be chatting about the warm days and nights, however our cold nights have slowed several varieties from growth.  Hostas are just beginning to fill their pots and coreopsis has really shown reluctance.  We all need to be patient and give our plants another week or two.

Hostas are beginning to fill their pots and coreopsis has really shown reluctance this spring.  We all need to be patient and give our plants anouther week or two.

This year's Perennial of the Year is Nepeta 'Walker's Low'.  The Perennial Plant Association has awarded this honor for 2007.  Introduced in 1988 in Europe, 'Walker's Low' catmint is great for attracting bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects, but is deer and rabbit resistant.  'Walker's Low' is a member of the mint family.  It will bloom almost continuously from May until frost.  It needs to be pruned back by two-thirds when the initial flowers fade.

Our family has grown by two and I imagine soon there will be more.  We have a pair of Mallards that visit regularly and enjoy browsing under the bird feeders.

Memorial Day is upon us and Adams' bustling to be ready not only with perennials, but in all departments.  There is a wonderful array of annuals as well as mixed containers and hanging baskets.

Wishing you all a pleasant Memorial Day weekend and I hope to see those of you who are choosing to enjoy the weekend gardening.

All the best,

Wayne
