WINTERIZING YOUR NEW PLANTINGS

As winter approaches there are some things you need to do to insure success in your landscape.

Water all current year’s plantings and all evergreen plants if soil conditions are dry. Continue regular watering until the ground freezes.

Spray Wilt-Pruf, or Wilt-stop on all new evergreen plantings made during the year to prevent winter drying of the foliage. Apply in mid-November and then again in late February for best protection. In windy areas, making a screen of burlap may be necessary.

Mulch all new plantings to protect roots from winter cold and frost heaving due to alternate freezing and thawing of the soil.

Prevent snow and ice damage to upright evergreens such as Arborvitae and Juniper by tying the main stems together with natural twine, strips of cloth or burlap. Tying should occur about 2/3 of the way up the stems for best support.

During the winter be watchful of heavy snow loads on your plants. The weight can break tree trunks and main stems in half. If necessary, carefully brush the snow off and reduce the weight on the plants. For weeping trees such as Weeping Mulberry or Cherry and the very delicate Japanese Maples, as snow accumulates underneath and freezes around the downward branches, it is very possible that when it melts it will pull down on them and crack them off. To prevent this, brush the snow out from around them.
